How to Handle Late Medical Bills

by Sam on February 10, 2010

In this harsh, unpredictable economy you’re likely not alone when faced with late unpaid medical bills; many others have found themselves with pilling medical bills, and no way to pay them.

As the bills accumulate and the amount owed grows exponentially, factoring in interest rates as well, you’ll eventually reach a point where it’s near impossible to clear the bill. Read on while I discuss some ways to properly handle the situation.

The very first thing you should do is check your budget for unneeded items. If the word budget isn’t a regular component in your vocabulary then that’s likely the reason why you’re unable to pay your medical bills. Cut your unneeded expenses and use it to pay off your debts. If you don’t have a budget it’s simple to set one up. Simply set-up a plan on how you will spend and manage your money on a weekly/monthly basis.

Review a copy of the medical bills, and double check to make sure you’re only being charged for services you received. Don’t let them charge you for something you didn’t get, and certainly don’t pay any hidden fees which are usually put in without your discretion.

After reviewing your bill, speak with a representative from the hospital. Try and negotiate the price of the bill down and get it as cheap as possible. They will often lower the bill to assist you in paying it off. They want to get paid as much as you want to clear your debt.

After your negotiations with the hospital are over (and hopefully successful) set-up a payment plan to ensure the late medical bills are paid off eventually.
